General Information

Campomanesia laurifolia is a semideciduous shrub or small tree with an elongated crown; it can grow 4 - 16 metres tall. The more or less grooved bole can be 15 - 25cm in diameter[].
The edible fruit is quite popular within its native range, where it is often gathered from the wild. The tree has been recommended for home cultivation, and also for use in reforestation schemes[].
A forest tree apparently restricted to the mountains around Rio de Janeiro, most recent collection is dated 1961. The plant is classified as 'Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2011)[].

Succeeds in full sun and also in dappled shade[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw. A sweet, acidulous pulp containing 10 - 20 small seeds[]. The yellow, globose fruit can be 5cm in diameter[].

Other Uses

The wood is fine-textured, straight-grained, moderately heavy, hard to cut, slightly susceptible to wood eating organisms[]. It is used for small applications in general construction[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed[]. A germination rate in excess of 30% can be expected, with the seeds sprouting within 20 - 40 days[]. Seedlings grow away slowly[].
