General Information

Lemonwood is a deciduous tree with a large, intense, pyramidal green crown; it can grow 10 - 25 metres tall[, ]. The bole is straight and cylindrical, 50 - 70cm in diameter and can be unbranched for 30 metres[, ].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its timber, which is traded commercially. Suitable for use as a pioneer species for re-establishing woodland, it is a very ornamental tree, with a pyramidal crown similar to a conifer, that can be used in landscaping in general[].

Habitat

The white-yellowish wood is straight grained, fine-texture, very heavy, hard, very resistant to flexing and of good natural durability if protected from the weather[, ]. It works well and is very durable, especially when not in contact with the soil[]. It is used for flooring, decorative veneer, furniture, turnery, panels, tool handles, toys, wood carvings etc[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe. The miniscule seed should be surface sown in a nursery seedbed in a sunny position. Water them in well so that they are slightly covered by the soil. A reasonable germination rate can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 25 - 35 days[]. When the seedlings are 4 - 5cm tall, transplant them to individual containers and they should be ready to plant out into their permanent positions about 5 - 6 months later when around 30cm tall[].
