General Information

Calophyllum peekelii is an evergreen tree growing from 20 - 40 metres tall with some specimens reputed to have reached 63 metres. It has a broad crown with spreading branches. The straight bole, which sometimes has small, thick buttresses or spurs up to 1.6 metres tall, is up to 180cm in diameter[, ].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its wood and bark, which are used locally for fuel and construction.
The tree is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2011)[].

Usually found in well-drained primary lowland rainforest, also in seasonally inundated rainforest, swamps and forest growing over limestone at elevations up to 311 metres[].

Cultivation Details

A plant of the moist, lowland tropics, where it is found at elevations up to 350 metres. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 20 - 30°c, but can tolerate 10 - 38°c[]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 2,500 - 3,000mm, but tolerates 1,800 - 3,500mm[].
Grows best in a sunny position[]. Succeeds in most soils of at least moderate fertility[]. Prefers a pH in the range 5.5 - 6.5, tolerating 4.5 - 7[].The tree is resistant to quite strong winds[].
Potential wood production on a 30-year rotation is 250 - 300 m3/ha[].
The trees are able to regenerate from seed in high forest and also in gaps[].

The wood is strong. It is excellent for building canoes or houses.
The bark makes an excellent fuel[]. It burns very well when removed from the log and dried due to the flammable latex it contains[].
