Both heartwood and sapwood are pale brown to oatmeal in colour, with no distinction between them. The texture is medium to coarse;the grain straight; the wood is not highly lustrous; there is no distinctive odour or taste. The wood has bands of soft cottony material that may be sporadic in occurrence. It is not very durable, being vulnerable to attack by decay fungi. It is very easy to season with no drying defects. The wood is easy to work in all operations but due to the bands of soft tissue, dressed surfaces are rough. It is used to make rafts along the eastern coast of Brazil, and has been suggested as an insulating material in Colombia[
