General Information

Antidesma tomentosum is a shrub or a tree that usually grows from 2 - 6 metres tall, occasionally reaching up to 17 metres. The bole can be up to 15cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use as a food, medicine and source of wood.

Edible Uses

The ripe fruits are eaten[, ]. The red, ovoid fruits are 11 - 14mm long and 5 - 9mm wide[, ].

Medicinal

The roots are chewed and applied for internal pain[].

Other Uses

The bark is burned and the ash is rubbed on the teeth to colour them[].

The sapwood is white, yellow, orange, pink or red-brown. The wood is hard, heavy, odourless and tasteless[]. The hard wood is used for making ploughs[].
