General Information

Albizia tulearensis is a deciduous tree, usually growing up to 15 metres tall, but occasionally to 20 metres. The bole can be up to 70cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use of its wood.
Albizia tulearensis is used for fuel and construction material at a subsistence level. The natural vegetation of Madagascar is under threat more widely from habitat loss as a result of conversion of land for agriculture or firewood, and the south western dry forest is one of the many vegetation types that has declined significantly with estimates of up to 30% reduction over the last 30 years. The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[].

A good quality wood, it is used for construction, beams, planks and coffins[, ].
The wood is used for fuel[].

Propagation

Seed - it has a hard seedcoat and may benefit from scarification before sowing to speed up germination. This can usually be done by pouring a small amount of nearly boiling water on the seeds (being careful not to cook them!) and then soaking them for 12 - 24 hours in warm water. By this time they should have imbibed moisture and swollen - if they have not, then carefully make a nick in the seedcoat (being careful not to damage the embryo) and soak for a further 12 hours before sowing.
