General Information

Xylopia emarginata is an evergreen tree with a very narrow, almost columnar crown; it can grow 10 - 20 metres tall. The erect, cylindrical bole can be 30 - 40cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its timber and fibre. A rather elegant tree with its narrow, shining crown, it is used in reforestation projects and has potential use in landscaping[].

Cultivation Details

A plant of mainly low elevations in the moist tropics, though it can also be found at elevations up to 1,200 metres[].

Agroforestry Uses:

A pioneer species within its native range, the tree is tolerant of periodic inundation and is suitable for planting along the banks of rivers and streams when restoring forest cover[].

Other Uses

A fibre from the bark is used for making ropes[].

The wood is light in weight, but hard, rigid, easy to work with and of low natural durability even when protected from the weather[]. It can be used in carpentry, for beams and lathes[].
The wood is used as a fuel and can be made into charcoal[].

Propagation

Seed - germination rates and time are improved if the seed is scarified by lightly abrading the seedcoat prior to sowing. Sow the seeds in a nursery seedbed. Germination rates are usually low, with sprouting taking place within 30 - 60 days. Transplant the seedlings into individual containers when they are 4 - 6cm tall. Seedlings are quite slow growing and it will take 9 - 11 months from germination until they are ready to plant into their permanent positions[].
