General Information

Tibouchina granulosa is an evergreen or semideciduous shrub or many-branched tree with a wide, dense, low crown; it can grow 8 - 12 metres tall. The short bole can be 30 - 40cm in diameter[].
The tree is sometimes harvested for its wood, which is used locally. A very ornamental tree, especially when in bloom, it is widely grown in gardens in the tropics and is also used as a street tree[].

Other Uses

The wood is moderately heavy, hard, of low durability if exposed to the elements[]. It can be used in making low value items for internal purposes, such as toys and light boxes[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed. The seed is very small and should only be covered with a very thin layer of soil - cover the soil with a cheese cloth to avoid washing the seeds away when watering, removing the cloth as soon as germination is evident. A low germination rate can usually be expected, with the seed sprouting within a few weeks[]. When the seedlings are 2 - 4cm tall, pot them up into individual containers and they should be ready to plant out 6 - 7 months later[].
The seed has a short period of viability in storage[].
