Sporobolus panicoides is a slender, annual grass, sometimes clump-forming, with erect culms up to 1 metre tall[].
The plant is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use as a source of food.

Locally common in sunny or lightly shaded locations, in woodland on sandy soils, in granite sandveld and on rocky hillsides, often at roadsides or in other disturbed localities; at elevations up to 2,100 metres[].
