Cultivation Details

A plant mainly of subtropical areas, just entering into the tropics in Brazil, where it is found at elevations up to 1,400 metres. It grows in areas with a distinct dry season, becoming dormant in the dry season[].

Propagation

Seed - the very small seed needs to be handled with care since young plants are very susceptible to fungal diseases[]. Surface sow on a finely graded sowing compost, maintaining a high humidity and temperature around 18 - 20°c[]. Germination usually occurs within 2 - 3 weeks. Increase temperatures to 21 - 23°c after germination, and prick out into individual pots when large enough to handle[]. Seedlings may form a small tuber and then cease growth, especially if water is in short supply[].
Division of tubers. Each section must have a bud[].
Leaf cuttings[]. Detach a growing leaf and score the veins before setting it on the propagation medium. Small tubers are formed where the veins were scored[].
