This species is closely related to Sindora velutina and Sindora wallichii; some botanists believe that they actually all form one species[].

General Information

Sindora beccariana is an emergent, deciduous tree growing up to 57 metres tall[]. The bole can be up to 130cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its wood, which is a source of 'sepetir' timber and is exported as a fine joiner's wood[, ].
This uncommon species, as well as others in the genus, may be seriously threatened by large-scale exploitation of the forests[]. It has been classified as 'Data Deficient' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(1998)[].

We have no specific information for this species, but the wood oil obtained from various species in this genus can be used to treat skin diseases[].

Other Uses

The bole is said to yield a resinous wood-oil384]. The oil is obtained by making V-cuts in the trunk and up to 10 litres of oil can be obtained from the most productive species[]. The oils obtained from the various species in this genus all have similar properties - they consist of a mixture of sesquiterpenes that are non-drying, limpid, light yellow in colour, homogenous and pleasantly fragrant. The oil serves diverse uses, in perfumes, paints, varnishes, for illumination etc[].


The timber is used as sepetir for flooring, furniture, panelling and doors[]. The wood is used for furniture and is a fine wood for joinery[, ].

The heartwood is pink-brown to red-brown, weathering to darker shade and often streaked with darker-coloured layers; it is clearly demarcated from the light pink sapwood. The texture is moderately fine and even; the grain shallowly interlocked. The wood is moderately durable. It is slightly difficult to difficult to resaw and cross-cut, but is easy to plane and the surface produced is smooth; nailing property is rated good. It is suitable for light construction, joinery and panelling, high-class cabinet work and furniture (especially the timber containing dark streaks)[].
