The heartwood is a copper red-brown with blackish veins; it is clearly demarcated from the 6 - 10cm wide band of sapwood. The texture is coarse; the grain straight or interlocked; there is a blackish resin exudation. The wood is light to moderately heavy; soft to moderately hard; moderately durable, being resistant to dry wood borers and moderately resistant to fungi and termites. The wood seasons at a normal rate, with only a slight risk of checking or distortion; once dry it is stable in service. It works well with ordinary tools, though resin can clog them; nailing and screwing are good; gluing is correct, but needs to be done with care because of the resin exudation; the resin exudation also means that the wood is often painted - wood from less resinous logs can be used as a substitute for walnut (Juglans spp.). The wood has a wide range of applications, being used for purposes such as construction, joinery, light carpentry, panelling, boxes and crates, shingles, blockboard, veneer, particle boards etc[
