Useful Tropical Plants

Peristrophe paniculata

(Forssk.) Brummitt

Acanthaceae

There is considerable confusion over the correct name for this species. We are following the treatment in Flora of China 19: 1-884. In C. Y. Wu, P. H. Raven & D. Y. Hong and several other works. However, I. Darbyshire & K. Vollesen, in The transfer of the genus Peristrophe to Dicliptera (Acanthaceae), with a new species described from eastern Africa; Kew Bulletin 62: 119-128 (2007), have proposed transferring the genus Peristrophe to Dicliptera - in which case this species will be Dicliptera paniculata (Forssk.) I.Darbysh. This treatment has been largely adopted in Africa, but not yet in Asia and the Americas.
