General Information

Parashorea malaanonan is an evergreen tree with a dense, dome-shaped crown; it can grow up to 60 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be free of branches for up to 30 metres, up to 200cm in diameter, with large, plank-like buttresses up to 4 metres high and spreading out to over 2.5 metres[, ].
Used as white seraya timber, the tree is commonly harvested from the wild, furnishing the most important commercial timber of northern Borneo[, ].
The plant is classified as 'Critically Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[].

Other Uses

The heartwood is pinkish-white to light yellow or light brown, with pink shades, there are more or less frequent white lines from resin canals; it is not clearly demarcated from the 2 - 7cm wide band of whitish sapwood that turns light grey upon drying. The texture is coarse; the grain interlocked; there is no characteristic odour or taste. The wood is light to moderately heavy; soft to moderately hard; not very durable having a small resistance to fungi but susceptible to dry wood borers and termites. It dries at a normal rate with only a slight risk of checking and distortion; once dry it is poorly stable in service. It can be worked with ordinary tools though these need to be kept sharp in order to reduce the risk of tearing and the tendency to woolliness; the interlocked grain produces a broad stripe figure on quartersawn wood; filling is recommended in order to obtain a good finish; nailing and screwing are good; gluing is correct. The wood is used for purposes such as light carpentry, interior panelling and joinery, furniture components, boxes and crates, formwork, veneer etc[, , ].
