General Information

Margaritaria anomala is a deciduous shrub or a tree that can grow from 1 - 6 metres tall[, ].
The plant is often harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine, and also sometimes as a food and source of wood. The plant is considered to be the best natural treatment for impotency in Madagascar.
Although not currently evaluated in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, Margaritaria anomala is probably not common in its distribution area. It is rare and endangered in Mauritius, and a multiplication program has started there[].

Cultivation Details

A dioecious species, both male and female forms need to be grown if fruit and seed are required[].

Edible Uses

Fruit[]. The subglobose fruit can be 6 - 8mm in diameter, containing a single, large seed[].

Medicinal

A bitter root decoction is considered the best medicine to treat impotence in Madagascar[]. It is also taken to treat chronic constipation[].

Other Uses

The twigs are used to make baskets[].

The wood is hard and used to make tool handles and peddles[].
