Harpullia cupanioides is a shrub or a tree, usually growing up to 20 metres tall but sometimes reaching 40 metres. The cylindrical bole is sometimes crooked, but can be free of branches for up to 10 metres; it is usually up to 40cm in diameter, occasionally to 100cm with buttresses up to 2 metres high and 2 metres outwards[
