Guatteria bernardii R.E.Fr., often considered to be a synonym of Guatteria schomburgkiana Mart., has been treated as distinct in Maas P.J.M et al; Confronting a morphological nightmare: Revision of the Neotropical genus Guatteria (Annonaceae); Blumea Vol. 60 1 - 219; 2015[].

General Information

Guatteria schomburgkiana is a shrub or a tree that can grow from 2 - 30 metres tall. The bole can be 3 - 50cm in diameter[, ].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use as a food and probably also of wood and fibre.

Plants can flower and produce fruit all year round[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw[]. A sweet flavour[]. The fruits are produced in bunches of 5 - 20. Maturing black, each ellipsoid to globose fruit can be 6 - 13mm long and 5 - 8mm wide, containing a single large seed[].

The wood of the closely related Guatteria bernardii (see nomenclature notes above) has been used for construction, whilst the fibrous bark has been used for cordage[]. It is very likely that the wood and bark of this species can be used in the same way[].
