General Information

Gonystylus velutinus is a tree that can grow up to 25 - 50 metres tall. The bole can be around 35 - 89cm in diameter with buttresses up to 230cm tall[, ].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use of its wood. It is a minor source of the timber 'ramin'[].
Gonystylus velutinus has a wide native range but despite this the population is threatened and in decline. The species suffers from poor regeneration in the wild as a result of the lack of seed trees caused by the logging of the largest trees, poor replanting efforts and the species slow, intrinsic growth. The species is further threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation across its range due to the expansion of agriculture and infrastructure. The species is currently still considered common in Indonesia, but globally it is classified as 'Near Threatened' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2018)[].

Ramin timber is a whitish, light-weight wood that is highly prized and popular as a decorative cabinet wood. The timber is also widely used in the manufacture of furniture and various items of interior decoration such as wall-panelling, light flooring, turnery, venetian blind slats, picture frames, drawing boards, and a few others. In construction industry, the timber is commonly used for making planks, door and window frames, mouldings, skirtings, ceilings, partitionings, and others. Ramin timber is also highly suitable for veneer, plywood, block-board, and particle-board manufacture[].
