Gonystylus velutinus has a wide native range but despite this the population is threatened and in decline. The species suffers from poor regeneration in the wild as a result of the lack of seed trees caused by the logging of the largest trees, poor replanting efforts and the species slow, intrinsic growth. The species is further threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation across its range due to the expansion of agriculture and infrastructure. The species is currently still considered common in Indonesia, but globally it is classified as 'Near Threatened' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2018)[
