This species closely resembles Dorio dulcis, but differs in the colour of the fruit. Moreover, the fruit opens while still on the tree showing the dark red arils, whereas the fruit of Durio dulcis drops unopened and has dark yellow arils[].

Cultivation Details

A tree of low to moderate elevations in the moist tropics, found at elevations up to 1,300 metres[].
Often found on clay-rich soils in the wild[].
Seedling trees can commence flowering when only 6 years old[].

Edible Uses

The sweet fruit pulp is eaten raw[]. The aril around the seed is edible but not very juicy, hardly fragrant and not very tasty[]. A very sweet flavour[]. Unlike many other durians, the aril is free of odour[]. The fruit is often used for relish and is used in soups[]. The fruit is an orange-yellow, globose to ellipsoid capsule, about 10 - 15 cm in diameter, with sharp pyramidal 1 cm long spines, dehiscent into 5 valves while still attached to the branch[]. The ellipsoid, glossy-brown seeds are 4 cm x 2 cm, completely enclosed by a fleshy, dark red, edible aril[].
