General Information

Dipterocarpus dyeri is a semideciduous tree growing from 30 - 40 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be free of branches for up to 25 metres; it has low buttresses and can be up to 125cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its wood and resin, which are mainly used locally.
The plant is severely threatened by habitat loss due to human activity. It is classified as 'Critically Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2011)[].

Cultivation Details

A plant of monsoonal areas of the tropical lowlands, where it can be found at elevations up to 800 metres, but more commonly only to 500 metres[].
Shade tolerant when young, older trees become more light demanding[]. It grows well on grey soils and stony brown soils in depressions which may not be well drained during the rainy season[].
Members of this genus generally only regenerate naturally in the shade of the forest. Seedlings and saplings can persist in dense forest shade for many years. In their first 2 years the young plants cannot tolerate major openings in the canopy, but after they are well established (about 120cm tall) the canopy can be opened up around them to speed up their growth[].

Other Uses

A resinous oil is obtained from the wood[]. It is used traditionally in lighting[].
The oil is obtained by cutting a hole in the trunk near the base (about 90 - 150cm from the ground) and then dipping out the resin with a spoon as it collects there. To prolong the flow, a fire made from dead leaves or brushwood is made in the hole at intervals - this burns off the dried resinous film and allows the resin to flow again[, ].

The heartwood is brownish red; it is clearly demarcated from the rather thick band of heartwood. The wood is hard, heavy and easy to work[]. It is commonly used for house construction, boat- and furniture making[].
