General Information

Crudia senegalensis is a tree with a spreading crown; usually growing 5 - 10 metres tall but with specimens up to 30 metres recorded. The bole, which is often low-branching and crooked, can be up to 90cm in diameter with low buttresses[, ].
The tree is sometimes harvested from the wild for its wood, but is not commonly used because its wood is too hard to saw easily. It is valued as an ornamental shade tree[].

Other Uses

The wood is greyish brown, often dark brown in the centre of the log. It has a moderately fine texture and it is very hard, making it very difficult to saw and work. The very heavy and hard wood is rarely used, but it has been used for making boards in Sierra Leone[].

Propagation

Seed - germination usually starts 2 - 3 months after sowing and the germination rate is low. Pre-treatment of the seeds is needed to obtain fair germination results[]. Scarification is a common treatment for seeds in this family. This can usually be done by pouring a small amount of nearly boiling water on the seeds (being careful not to cook them!) and then soaking them for 12 - 24 hours in warm water. By this time they should have imbibed moisture and swollen - if they have not, then carefully make a nick in the seedcoat (being careful not to damage the embryo) and soak for a further 12 hours before sowing[].
