This species was only recognised as distinct in 2002, prior to this it had been seen as a lowland form of Cola usambarensis[]. It is quite likely that the uses of the two are interchangeable[].

Cola lukei is a much-branched, evergreen tree growing 6 - 10 metres tall[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use of its wood.
The plant has a very restricted range and is under threat due to illegal logging and coppicing. It is classified as 'Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2011)[].
