General Information

Chimarrhis barbata is an evergreen tree with an oval, sparse crown; it can grow 10 - 25 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be 40 - 70cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its timber, which is used locally. An ornamental plant, it is recommended for landscaping in parks and public squares[].

The wood is straight-grained; medium texture; moderately heavy; hard, with good mechanical properties and moderately durable when exposed to the weather420]. It is used traditionally for making oars and is also used locally for general carpentry, cabinet making and tool handles[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe. The miniscule seeds should be surface sown in a finely-prepared seedbed in a sunny position. Gently press the seeds into the soil, being careful not to cover them. The germination rate is usually low, with the seeds germinating in 40 - 50 days[]. Prick out the seedlings into individual containers when they are about 4 - 5cm tall and they should be ready to plant out about 5- 6 months later[].
