This species was formerly recognized as part of Ceriops decandra in the majority of its range. Ceriops decandra is now recognized as being restricted to the eastern coast of India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, southwest Thailand and the western Malay peninsula, whilst this species extends from Thailand, through Malaysia to Indonesia and thePhilippines[].

General Information

Ceriops zippeliana is an evergreen tree in the north of its range, but more commonly multi-stemmed and shrubby in the southern part of its range. It generally grows 3 metres or more tall[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a source of tannins and dyestuff.
This species is widespread and is common. It is, however, threatened by the loss of mangrove habitat throughout its range, primarily due to extraction and coastal development, and there has been an estimated 23% decline in mangrove area within its range in the 275 years from 1980 - 2007. The plant is currently classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[].
