General Information

Ceiba glaziovii is a deciduous tree with a wide, much branched crown; usually growing 10 - 18 metres tall. The spiny bole is swollen for the first 2 - 3 metres and can be 100cm in diameter[, ].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use as a source of wood and fibre. It is very ornamental when in bloom[].

The floss in the seed capsules is used as a stuffing material for pillows, mattresses, furniture etc[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe. Sow the seed in a semi-shaded position in a nursery seedbed. Germination rates in excess of 80% can be expected, with the seeds germinating within a few days[]. Transplant the seedlings to individual containers when they have 5 - 6 leaves. They should be ready to plant out 4 - 5 months later[].
