General Information

Cariniana ianeirensis is a semideciduous tree with an open, more or less roundish crown; it can grow 25 - 35 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be 40 - 70cm in diameter[].
The tree is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use of its wood.
A species known only from four collections in the Atlantic forests of Tijuca and Itaocara. Its proximity to Rio de Janeiro places it under serious pressure from urban encroachment and recent intensive fieldwork in the area has failed to find living specimens. The plant is classified as 'Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2011)[].

Other Uses

The wood is medium-textured, straight-grained, moderately heavy, with moderate mechanical properties and a low resistance to wood-eating organisms. It is used in general construction; for making anchor plates, toys, broom handles etc[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in individual containers - placing two or three seeds in each container. A moderate germination rate can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 15 - 25 days[].
