Common Name:

General Information

Bridelia insulana is a medium to large tree with a large, diffusely spreading crown, ranging in height from 10 - 25 metres[]. The bole can be clear or multi-stemmed, sometimes buttressed, and around 25 - 60cm in diameter[].
The plant is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use as a food, medicine and source of wood.

Habitat

Primary and secondary rain forests, often along rivers, but also on dry land, sandy to loamy or clayey soil, or on limestone, at elevations from sea level up to 1,500 metres[].

Edible Uses

Fruit[, ]. The reddish, ovoid fruit is 10mm in diameter[]. The fruit has a thin flesh surrounding a single seed[].

The bark is used for colouring saguwer (palm wine) red[].

Medicinal

A native medicine for headache[].

A decoction of the leaves is applied as a lotion against itch[]. The leaves are heated over a fire until they are soft and are then applied as a poultice on sores and ulcerations[].

Other Uses

The timber is sometimes used in house-building, as house posts and for knife handles[].
