Common Name:

General Information

Bridelia stipularis is a scrambling shrub that can produce stems 16 - 20 metres long, or a small, sparsely-branched tree up to 8 metres tall with laxly pendulous branches[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food, medicine and source of materials.

Habitat

Fruit[]. The dull dark reddish to black fruit is 7 - 12mm long and 6 - 11mm in diameter[].

Medicinal

The bark is used as a medicine against intestinal worms[]. A decoction of the bark is used as a treatment for cough, fever, and asthma[].
In tests the bark has shown hypotensive and hypoglycaemic activity[].

An infusion of the leaves is used as a treatment against colic and jaundice[].

The seeds possess haemaglutinating properties[].

An infusion of the boiled root is used in the treatment of thrush and in postpartum treatment[].
