The plant is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use of its fibre.
This species is known from only one locality (Moulmein) and two old collections (the type and 18 Oct. 1875, Kuntze 6274 (NY)). However, the area has undergone considerable conversion from natural habitats to farmland and the species is probably at risk. The plant is classified as 'Data Deficient' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[

Propagation

Seed - sow in a container in lightly shaded position, only just covering the seed. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on until large enough to plant out.
Division. Very easy, larger divisions can be planted straight into their permanent positions whilst smaller clumps are best potted up and kept in a cold frame until they are growing away well.
