General Information

Bobgunnia fistuloides is a tree that can grow 7 - 25 metres or more tall. The bole is slightly tortuous, 6 - 60cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and source of wood. The wood is of a good quality and is traded internationally.
Bobgunnia fistuloides has a fairly wide distribution. Its habitat is experiencing general threats but there is no evidence that these pose a major threat to the plant at present. It is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2012)[].

Known Hazards

Sawdust from the wood can sometimes act as an irritant[].

Although many species within the family Fabaceae have a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria, this species is said to be devoid of such a relationship and therefore does not fix atmospheric nitrogen[].

Medicinal

The bark is used in the treatment of cutaneous and subcutaneous parasitic infections[].

Other Uses

The heartwood is pinkish-white to light red, with red-brown veins; it is clearly demarcated from the 1 - 2cm wide band of sapwood. The texture is fine; the grain interlocked. The wood is very heavy, hard, elastic; very durable, being very resistant to fungi and resistant to dry wood borers and termites. The wood seasons slowly with a slight risk of distortion but a high risk of checking; once dry it is stable in service. It works well with power tools, though sawblades can vibrate and overheat, there is a tendency to burn the wood in boring and there is sometimes a slight woolliness; nailing and screwing are good, but require pre-boring; gluing is correct for internal use only. The wood is used for purposes such as high class furniture, cabinetwork, carving, turnery, cooperage, tool handles, percussion instruments and sliced veneer[].
The wood is used for fuel[].
