Other Uses

The heartwood is pinkish-white to light red, with red-brown veins; it is clearly demarcated from the 1 - 2cm wide band of sapwood. The texture is fine; the grain interlocked. The wood is very heavy, hard, elastic; very durable, being very resistant to fungi and resistant to dry wood borers and termites. The wood seasons slowly with a slight risk of distortion but a high risk of checking; once dry it is stable in service. It works well with power tools, though sawblades can vibrate and overheat, there is a tendency to burn the wood in boring and there is sometimes a slight woolliness; nailing and screwing are good, but require pre-boring; gluing is correct for internal use only. The wood is used for purposes such as high class furniture, cabinetwork, carving, turnery, cooperage, tool handles, percussion instruments and sliced veneer[
