General Information

Aspidosperma subincanum is a deciduous tree with a dense, oblong crown; it can grow 15 - 25 metres tall[]. To 35 metres in Peru[]. The straight, cylindrical crown can be 40 - 50cm in diameter[, ].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its wood. An ornamental tree, it is suitable for use in landscaping[].

Known Hazards

The freshly cut wood and sap of Aspidosperma species causes irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, with general malaise[].
The sawdust, on contact with abraded skin, produces local burning and a vesicular eruption with general symptoms of muscular weakness and cramps, sweating, dryness of the mouth, and faintness[].
Once the wood is thoroughly dry it loses its toxicity unless polishes or dyes in organic solvents are used on it[]

Other Uses

The heartwood is dark brown; the sapwood yellowish or dull brown, sometimes with a greyish cast. The wood is fine-textured; the grain straight but irregular; moderately heavy, with excellent mechanical properties; durable and moderately resistant to wood-eating organisms. Hard to cut, it is capable of taking a high polish. It is used for internal finishing in buildings, parquet blocks, flooring boards, partition walls, footwear, tool handles etc[, ].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed or in individual containers. A germination rate usually in excess of 50% can be expected, with the seed sprouting within 15 - 30 days[]. When the seedbed-sown seedlings are 5 - 6cm tall, pot them up into individual containers[].
The seed has a viability of no more than 5 months[].
