General Information

Artocarpus hypargyreus is a fairly slow-growing evergreen tree growing 10 - 25 metres tall. The bole can be 40cm in diameter[, ].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its timber and edible fruit. It is also cultivated for its fruit in China and USA (Florida)[].
Population numbers have declined because of overexploitation of the tree for timber and habitat loss. The plant is classified as 'Vulnerable' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2011)[].

Cultivation Details

A tree of the tropics and subtropics of China. They are moderately hardy, usually surviving temperatures down to -3°c, with some specimens surviving even lower temperatures[].
In general, species in this genus prefer a deep, well-drained soil; young plants need some shade, but need increasing light levels as they mature[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw[, ]. The little fruits have a red fruit pulp and a pleasant, slightly sour taste[]. The fruit can also be dried or preserved in syrup[]. The fruits are about 2cm in diameter[]. The fruit often ripens seedless[].
