General Information

Aphanocalyx hedinii is a tree; it can grow up to 35 metres tall. The cylindrical bole can be free of branches for 15 metres or more and up to 330cm in diameter with plank buttresses[].
No uses are currently recorded. Since this species is closely related to the probably fast growing Aphanocalyx heitzii, which yields a good quality timber, and trees can grow to enormous diameters, this species may prove very interesting as a plantation timber crop, or for enrichment planting[].
This species is endemic to Cameroon, where it occurs very locally in three small areas. So far the species has not been found elsewhere and has not been collected recently. Two of the sites lie in heavily logged and cultivated areas. The species may therefore be extinct or is at least severely threatened[]. The plant is classified as 'Critically Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[].

No uses are recorded for this species, but since it is closely related to Aphanocalyx heitzii, which yields a good quality timber, this species may prove to have the same uses[]. A description of the wood of Aphanocalyx heitzii follows:-
The heartwood is pink-brown to red-brown; it is not clearly demarcated from the 5 - 15cm wide band of sapwood. The texture is medium; the grain interlocked. The wood is light in weight; soft to moderately hard; not very durable, being susceptible to fungi, dry wood borers and termites. It seasons somewhat slowly, with a high risk of distortion and a slight risk of checking; once dry it is moderately stable in service. It can be worked with ordinary tools, though the presence of interlocked grain can lead to tearing and there is a tendency to woolliness; nailing and screwing are good; gluing is correct. The wood is used in light construction, joinery, flooring, boxes and crates, furniture components; stairs, veneer etc[].
