General Information

Annona neosalicifolia is a deciduous tree with a dense, round crown; it can grow 10 - 20 metres tall. The tree branches from fairly low down[].
The edible fruit is valued by the local population and is often gathered from the wild. The tree is sometimes cultivated for its fruit in areas within its native range[].

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw[625. A sweet taste, but the gelatinous pulp is not easily removed from the seeds[]. The yellow fruit can be 6cm long and 5cm in diameter[].

Other Uses

The wood is light in weight and of low resistance to insect attacks[]. It is used only for making lightweight boxes[].
The wood is of low thermal energy and is not valued as a fuel[].

Propagation

Seed - it has a very hard outer layer and germinates much more easily if scarified[]. This can usually be done by pouring a small amount of nearly boiling water on the seeds (being careful not to cook them!) and then soaking them for 12 - 24 hours in warm water. By this time they should have imbibed moisture and swollen - if they have not, then carefully make a nick in the seedcoat (being careful not to damage the embryo) and soak for a further 12 hours before sowing. Sow the seeds in a nursery seedbed or in individual containers in a lightly shaded position. Germination rates of scarified seeds can above 60%, with the seeds sprouting within 35 - 45 days[].
