Common Name: Nepal Cardamom

General Information

Amomum aromaticum is a herbaceous plant growing from a rhizomatous rootstock; it produces a cluster of leafy stems usually up to 100cm tall, though sometimes reaching 200cm or more[, ].
The seed is sometimes gathered from the wild for medicinal purposes and as a food flavouring. The plant is occasionally cultivated as a food crop[].

Medicinal

The seeds are antibacterial and stomachic[]. They are used to alleviate dyspepsia, flatulence, colic, vomiting, diarrhoea and coughs[]
The seeds are used to make a gargle or mouth wash to treat toothache, gingivitis and parodontosis[].
The seed contains cineol[].

The fruit, collected in winter, is sun-dried or heat-dried. The pcricarp is removed before use[].
