General Information

Allanblackia ulugurensis is an evergreen tree that is rarely only shrubby. It usually grows 15 - 30 metres tall with a spreading, open crown. The straight bole, which is slightly buttressed, can be clear of branches for up to 7.5 metres[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for its edible seeds, which are used locally. The seeds are often sold in local markets[]. The tree is grown to provide shade and as an ornamental[].
The plant is classified as 'Vulnerable' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2011)[].

Cultivation Details

A plant of the moist tropics, where it is found at elevations from 700 - 2,050 metres[]. It grows best in areas where the mean annual temperature is in the range 12.8 - 30°c[]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 1,200 - 2,400mm[].
Succeeds in full sun in a well-drained soil[]. In the wild, plants are found in yellow-red sandy loam soils at higher altitudes and in red to yellow-red sandy clay loam soils derived from coarse grained siliceous rocks in lower altitudes especially dominated latosols[]
A dioecious species, both male and female forms need to be grown if fruit and seed are required[].

Edible Uses

Seeds yield an edible fat. They are dried in the sun, pounded, boiled and then cooled. The suspended fat is skimmed off, heated, filtered and used in cooking[].

Medicinal

The fat obtained from the seeds is used as a treatment against coughs and chest problems[].

Other Uses

The fat obtained from the seeds is used in cosmetics and soap making[].

A yellow dye is obtained from the sap of the fruit and bark[].
