General Information

Albizia aylmeri is a tree growing up to 25 metres tall. The bole, which is often slightly twisted, can be up to 80cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use of its wood.
Albizia aylmeri has a restricted area of distribution and may be threatened by genetic erosion. It was classified as 'Endangered' in pre-1994 IUCN Red Lists, but has not been evaluated since then and is too poorly known to establish its conservation status[].

Known Hazards

The wood dust may cause irritation to the nose and throats of sawmill workers[].

The heartwood is reddish brown, often darker striped; it is distinctly demarcated from the up to 5cm wide layer of creamy to yellowish sapwood. The grain is often spiral, texture fine to coarse and even. The wood is moderately heavy, moderately durable, being resistant to termite attack, but susceptible to marine borers. It saws and works well, but causes rapid blunting of saw teeth and tool edges. It finishes to a smooth or rough surface depending on the wood texture. The nailing, screwing, gluing and staining properties are all good. The wood is used as timber and is suitable for construction, light flooring, interior trim, toys and novelties, turnery, veneer, plywood, hardboard and particle board[].

Propagation

Seed - it has a hard seedcoat and may benefit from scarification before sowing to speed up germination. This can usually be done by pouring a small amount of nearly boiling water on the seeds (being careful not to cook them!) and then soaking them for 12 - 24 hours in warm water. By this time they should have imbibed moisture and swollen - if they have not, then carefully make a nick in the seedcoat (being careful not to damage the embryo) and soak for a further 12 hours before sowing.
